Involuntary retirement

Q. I am 53 and was told that because my retirement is involuntary I can withdraw without penalty. Is this true?

A. No. If you retire from federal service before the calendar during which you reach age 55, your TSP withdrawals will be subject to the early withdrawal penalty until you reach age 59 1/2 unless you qualify for one of the exceptions listed on Page 7 of notice TSP-536.
