Annuities

Q. I am a couple of years from retiring. Do you have any recommendations on investing in annuities? Should a person remain in the TSP throughout retirement?

A. In general, I think that a fixed immediate annuity is a reasonable alternative to consider for supporting retirement income, and it should be the benchmark against which you compare any other options, including invest-and-withdrawal. The TSP is probably the best retirement investment vehicle you will find, so you should be cautious in deciding to leave it. In my opinion, most investors would be better off avoiding deferred or variable annuity contracts, entirely.
